Default Mesmers and PvE

I'm looking to make a return to GW after a long hiatus (I played GW1 for many years, many years ago, lol) and after reading up in various areas, I've heard people mention that mesmers are in a strong spot in PvE. However, when I left GW (just before EotN came out), I don't remember them as being that great at PvE.

Because of this, I'm wondering, 1) What skills/builds changed? 2) What areas of PvE are mesmers strong in and 2) Why not use an ele with mesmer skills instead of a mesmer?

Short answers:

1) A lot of them. Due to the state of the game if a profession isn't at least reasonably good at pumping damage (or has options which allows it to do so) it isn't good for much. Hence a buff. Also, Fast Casting reduces recharge time now (PvE only). You can check the update page on the official website (or the wiki or wherever else it gets posted) for specifics, as well as checking gwpvx for meta builds.

2) All of them. They might get squeezed out in four person areas but they're still valuable (though I suppose that's true for a lot of things).

2) Reduced recharge time, as mentioned. Runes. A Necro or Ele primary would get good use out of Mesmer skills but they certainly don't make Mesmer primary redundant. Fast Casting also has powerful skills of its own, like Psychic Instability.

Ahh, yea, a reduced recharge from fast casting would definitely make a big difference in PvE. Thanks!

The skill rework and the change in HM enemies no longer having reduced cast duration for skills normally 1-sec and below (I think that was it?) made the biggest difference IMO.

I just noticed lately that Stolen Speed has been buffed for pve - looks pretty crazy now!

I was looking at this skill myself for a PvE mesmer, using a bunch of heroes with (normally) slow casting spells. So you call target with Stolen Speed and your heroes unleach fury after (incl cover hexes.)

I imagine it would be great with Rodgort's Invocation eles. The big problem with RI is it's 2 second cast: If foe dies before spell cast, your ele won't deal any nearby damage AND miss out on the energy regain from attunements.

I've used this with some elementalist heroes on my mesmer before and as an ele with a Stolen Speed hero. Most areas don't need Panic, so Stolen Speed would make for some somewhat faster deaths. Might want to ping foes and not stress too much about making a build specifically around it.
